Hitler held many of Wagner's original scores in his Berlin bunker at the end of World War II, despite the pleadings of Wieland Wagner to have these important documents put in his care; the scores perished with Hitler in the final days of the war. Conductors must therefore retrain themselves to ignore cues from singers. Shortly before his death inthe aged Wagner and Liszt reflect on Wagner's life: the people he has known, the events that occurred and the music he composed. He preferred a realm dominated by the strength and savagery exemplified in the Norse sagas. Wagner wrote that the German people were repelled by Jews due to their 'alien' appearance and behaviour: 'with all our speaking and writing in favour of the Jews' emancipation, we always felt instinctively repelled by any actual, operative contact with them.

When Hans is overly tired by his work for Wagner, he leaves, and Wagner hires Hans Richter as his new assistant. The Wagner Museum in Lucerne, Switzerland, is now a museum of period musical instruments and art collection of the Wagner family.
